The family of Thomas Ballance, Sr., lived at Middletown in Hyde County, N.C., where they were involved in shipping goods and produce along the East Coast. Their business kept them in contact with business firms in New York. The senior Ballance maintained a warehouse in Middletown primarily for the storage of agricultural products and for at least the 1847-1849 period, the family owned the schooner WALTER MERCHANT, although they used other schooners in their business as well. |
