Scope and content Correspondence, the majority of which is personal in nature, concerns agriculture, education, health, religion, society, and domestic life in North Carolina during the 19th century. With regard to agriculture, correspondents discuss farm failure, loss of property, and the preparation of crops for market. Other topics include the opening of public schools in Pasquotank County, N.C.; the prevalence of diphtheria in and around Plymouth, N.C.; and the efforts of eastern North Carolinians and the Confederate Army to blockade Roanoke Island against Union troops. Also includes an authorization (1863) from Col. S. L. Freemont, chief engineer and superintendent of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad, to James H. Hill for purchase of food stuffs. Financial records consist of accounts, receipts, warrants, an insurance premium notice, and charges for tuition and board at St. Mary's College in Raleigh. Also contains a catalog of the Camden Male and Female Academy of Camden, N.C., which lists the various curricula, textbooks, and fees; patent medicine book; copies of the North Carolina Farmer; and Civil War and romantic poems.
