Abstract |
Correspondence concerns personal and family matters; the Civil War, which includes letters from Alfred Roberson of the 40th North Carolina Regiment who discusses conditions at Fort Fisher (N.C.), the campaign around Petersburg, the blocking of railroad lines between Washington, D.C. and Baltimore; and the creation of the Martin County Fair Association. Legal records consist primarily of deeds for the transfer of land in Martin County between various members of the Roberson family. Financial records consist of receipts for money. Other items include a certificate making Alfred Roberson a corporal in E Company of the North Carolina Regiment of Volunteers; a warrant certifying that Prudence Roberson, widow of Alfred Roberson, is entitled to a widow's pension for her husband's participation in the Mexican War; illustrations of various models of Standard Sewing Machines; and operating instructions for a Remington Model 12 Repeating Rifle. |

Biographical note | Alfred Roberson, a Martin County, N.C., farmer, was married to Prudence Peel (1829-1913) and they had four children. He served in the Mexican War (1845-1848) and was killed in 1865 at Fort Anderson during the Civil War. |
