Abstract From the tango, cuarteto, and rock nacional of Argentina, to the salsa, son, and merengue of the Caribbean, from the hebu, huayno, and siku of native American cultures, to the marimba, punta and chirimia of Central America, Latin American music represents a vast array of styles and has permeated cultures on all parts of the globe. This book provides the most comprehensive overview of the wide range of musics - both popular and traditional - of the Spanish- and Portugese-speaking regions of South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. In 24 accessibly-written articles by 15 experts in the field, readers can find out what music and music-making in Latin America is all about, how it evolved, what it means and why, who makes it, who uses it, and where it is used. Divided into three parts, the handbook begins with an introduction to the music cultures of the region; then examines the issues and processes that have affected the development of music in Latin America; and ends with in-depth articles on the music and culture of the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, the Tropical-Forest Region, and two native American groups: the Warao and the Q'ero.
