Abstract Through an analysis of the work of one American musical icon, Pat Metheny, this text investigates human response to music, addressing our innermost feelings and biological reactions to what is heard. The book examines what people hear and perceive when listening to Metheny's music. In the opening chapters, the author discusses the methods of measuring aesthetic nature and response. Next, he presents a biography of Metheny, including his progression towards a rhetorical style. Finally, he explores research designed specifically to investigate the effect of Metheny's music on listeners who participated in a series of studies gathered over the period of one year, and the overall impact of the music on listeners.
