General note | Vols. 2 and 6 with title: Wit and mirth; or, Pills to purge melancholy; being a collection of the best merry ballads and songs, old and new. Fitted to all humours, having each their proper tune for either voice, or instrument, most of the songs being new set. |
General note | Publication originally begun in 1698, edited by Henry Playford; continued in 1707 by John Young. "In 1719-1720 ... Jocab Tonson published a final edition of Pills in six volumes. The songs were drastically re-arranged, and more than two hundred new ones, all written by Thomas D'Urfey, were added. These, together with nearly all the songs by D'Urfey which had already been included in the collection, were carefully brought together in volumes I and II."--C.L. Day. |
