Abstract Collection includes correspondence, clippings, invitations, statements, reports, genealogy, photographs, a pamphlet, a bound volume, a diary, and a minute book of William H. Osborn. The bulk of the correspondence is between Osborn and his wife shortly after their marriage in 1894, which includes mention of business talks with industrialist James B. Duke and a description of a conversation arising from the integration of a train car. Of particular interest is Osborn's 1914 diary, written while he was Internal Revenue commissioner. This volume is rich in comments about the Woodrow Wilson administration, public figures, politics, and national affairs. Entries concern federal patronage, revenue office activities, and government employment policies. Other materials discuss personal affairs, private business activities, political support, corporate tax collection, investigation of tax scandals, and a variety of internal revenue matters. Correspondents include Josephus Daniels, William Whitehead Fuller, James Allen Holt, William Gibbs McAdoo, Daniel Calhoun Roper, Samuel White Small, John Skelton Williams, and Woodrow Wilson. Minutes (1914-1917) taken by Mrs. Osborn as secretary of the Florence Crittenton Branch of the Sunshine and Community Society of Washington, D. C., are also included.
