Abstract Grimke, African American author, civil rights leader, and later prominent in the NAACP, reviews the anti-slavery movement after 1820 and praises Phillips as a sincere abolitionist and friend of American blacks. He casts Garrison as the "mother" and Phillips as the "father" of the movement.
