Summary | Diary, 1867-1868, kept by Hugh Henry on board the United States steamships TICONDEROGA and NATIONAL GUARD. Both ships were part of the United States Navy European Squadron. Henry describes daily ship board life, including the frequent loading of coal, but omits notations concerning weather, direction, and wind. Frequent mention is made of places and events in ports of call such as Africa, Portugal, France, Liberia, Russia, France, England, Italy and Greece. Henry witnessed many of the extensive ceremonial visits made by the United States Navy to inaugurate the European Squadron. Henry also describes visits and events on board other European Squadron vessels including the steamships COLORADO, FROLIC, the frigate FRANKLIN, and Admiral Farragut's flagship. Henry transfered from the TICONDEROGA to the NATIONAL GUARD on May 16, 1868. |
