Abstract Arnold Schoenberg [Schönberg], who formulated the system generally known as 'twelve-note music', was one of the great father figures of contemporary music. In this BBC Music Guide the author examines his Chamber Music, which embraces a wide variety of instrumental combinations and illustrates all stages of his development. The author also considers the relationship between conservative and radical elements in the composer and the cause of his eventual abandonment of orthodox tonality.
