Abstract |
Broadcast executive and radio station manager Abraham "Abe" Thompson, Jr. was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 22, 1951. After graduating from Western Illinois University in 1974, Thompson went to work for WVON radio as a salesman. In 1980, he was named local sales manager of WGCI. By 1985, he was president and station manager. After spending two years in Detroit reviving WRIF, Thompson returned to Chicago as station manager of WVAZ in 1988. In 1991, he began doing promotions for films and international festivals, including the Cancun Jazz Festival and the 1995 Sinbad's Soul Music Festival in St. Martin. Thompson was also a successful motivational speaker. In 2000 he published a book, My Thoughts, Your Book, Our Journal, written for his son, Phoenix. In 1999, he became president of Partnership Radio, a group of radio stations in Northwest Indiana. In 2003, Thompson was ranked as one of the thirty most influential African Americans in radio. |
