Abstract |
College president Dolores Cross was born in Newark, New Jersey on August 29, 1938. She earned her B.S. degree in education from Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey in 1963; her M.S. degree from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York; and her Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan in 1971. Cross was a university administrator at several schools, including the University of Minnesota and Chicago State University, where she was the first female president of a four-year public university in Illinois. She resigned to become the first female president of Atlanta's Morris Brown College. Her tenure at the financially troubled institution ended in 2002. Cross was later convicted of misappropriating federal funds, in an effort to keep Morris Brown College open. She also chaired the American Association of Higher Education. She chronicled her life story in her memoir, Breaking Through the Wall: A Marathoner's Story. |
