Abstract |
"This opportunity was afforded when the NOAA National Marine Sanctuary Program, the Office of Naval Research, and the U. S. Navy Submarine Forces Atlantic teamed to initiate a search for the U. S. Navy's, first submarine, the U. S. S. Alligator, lost in 1863 south of Cape Hatteras. ... The Ocracoke database and remote sensing survey project produced a database of about 2,000 shipwrecks lost off the North Carolina coast. Fieldwork centered on the area of Ocracoke Inlet because of the concentration of vessels lost there in the colonial period likely to historically significant. The project provided the opportunity for graduate students in the East Carolina University Program in Maritime Studies and PhD students from the Coastal Resources Management Program to participate in historical research and fieldwork aboard vessels." -- pages 140, 141, 142. |
