Summary Description: An account of Mélendez y Bruna's 1794 exploration of the Pacific coast from Acapulco, Mexico to Sonsonante, Guatemala aboard the brigantine El Activo. Includes foldouts with information regarding locations, latitudes and longitudes. The ship leaves the port of San Blas on February 13, 1794, en route to Acapulco, the first segment of an expedition to explore and map the Pacific coastline from Acapulco south to Sonsonate. They reach Realejo at the beginning of May, and go on to explore the Gulf of Fonseca (also called Golfo de Conchagua by Mélendez). Back in Realejo, many of the crew fall ill, and the ship does not begin the voyage home until September 16. In Acapulco, where they arrive on October 3rd, Mélendez is too ill to continue in command of the expedition, and the pilot, Juan Pantoja, is put in charge. Throughout the journey, Mélendez y Bruna describes the coastline and harbours, giving place coordinates and weather, and observing the geography, flora, fauna, and inhabitants of the surrounding areas. There are two charts containing information from the voyage south, such as date, temperature, the location of the ship at noon, weather, sea conditions, routes, and distances. Also included are two pen-and-ink maps: an overall map of the coast from Acapulco to Sonsonate; and a set of smaller maps detailing various harbours and bays along the coast. These have been separated and are now NL_VAULT_drawer_Ayer_MS_1135_map_1 and NL_VAULT_drawer_Ayer_MS_1135_map_2.
