Abstract |
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina was established in 1990 (the 12,000-acre Pungo Unit was established as Pungo National Wildlife Refuge in 1963, then merged into Pocosin Lakes, when it was established). Located in Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties, NC, this refuge's predominant vegetation type is southeastern shrub bog, also known as pocosin. This refuge has the largest American Black Bear population in the state, is home to the Red Wolf, one of the world's most endangered predators, and is designated as a globally important bird area. |
