Abstract |
The New Dictionary of Music and Musicians is the most comprehensive and up-to-date body of musical knowledge ever gathered together. The New Grove composer biographies have been selected from the dictionary to bring the most widely used of the biographies to a larger audience. Each has been expanded and updated for book publication and contains a comprehensive work-list, index and fully revised bibliography, in addition to the definitive discussion if the subject's life and works. To celebrate the centenary of Wagner's death, The New Grove Wagner has been added to the composer biography series. The biographical chapters of the book are freshly written by John Deathridge, a scholar who has worked on the new Wagner edition and catalogue and whose recent research has met with enthusiastic praise. Dr Deathridge has revised the work-list and bibliography in the light of recent findings. The discussion of Wagner's music and aesthetics--much admired when published in The New Grove--is by the renowned scholar Carl Dahlhaus, who has added a further chapter offering invaluable insights on Wagnerian theories of music and drama. |
