Abstract This book explores the relationship - either similarities or differences - between the Parisian chanson and the nascent Italian madrigal at the turn of the sixteenth century. This question has never before been the subject of a full-scale treatment, so that although the general outlines of the subject are more or less familiar there is much new arrangement of material, and much new and illuminating detail. This book gives an account of developments in the Parisian chanson from Ockeghem to Claudin de Sermisy.
General noteThe "Musical examples" (pages 139-255) include a number of complete vocal compositions from mss. or sixteenth-century printed sources, almost all of which appear here for the first time in a modern edition.
Bibliography noteIncludes bibliographical references and index.
