Abstract | The letters of fifty great composers, spanning a period from the end of the Renaissance in Italy to the middle of this century, are reproduced in this book. Selected by the editor for their insight into the mind and art of each composer, they form a moving and sympthetic history of the successes and failures, loves and tragedies, illnesses, rages, foibles, and weaknesses of the men who have dictated the course of Western music. The letters he has chosen include examples of the well-known literary prowess of Mozart, Mendelssohn and Berlioz, and also the fascinating selection of more personal material: the heart-searching of Beethoven; Bellini's persecution complex; Brahms' uncompromising self-criticism; Janacek on his deafness, and astonising confessions by Richard Strauss. |
