Abstract | Borodin was one of the leading members of the remarkable group of nineteenth-century Russian composers which also included Balakirev, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Mussorgsky. Although his output was relatively small, a high proportion of his works remain in the repertory. He combined his musical work with an outstanding career as a professor of chemistry making a number of important contributions to his subject. The author's mother was Borodin's adopted daughter, and this book, a considerably revised version of the 1955 Russian of Dianin's Life and Letters of Borodin, is the culmination of a lifetime devoted to the composer's work. It is divided into two parts, the first dealing with Borodin's life, the second with his compositions. In both parts, Dianin's unique personal relationship to the composer enables him to offer much material that will be new to Western readers. The section on the music is also noteworthy for the detailed study of Borodin's use of "programmes", and of the role of folk-songs in his compositions. |
