Abstract This study of the staging and production of Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Così fan tutte and Die Zauberflöte is not only a commentary of special interest to lovers of Mozart; it is also an attempt to explain the reasons for the permanent appeal of the famous operas. "A work of art," the author writes, "survives through the ages because each generation, each individual admirer, reads into it a personal message." Approaching the subject from this interesting standpoint, he deals in turn with the story, the music, the characters and the staging of each opera, comparing the productions in this country and abroad to see how far the intentions of Mozart and his collaborators have been fulfilled.
