Summary This thesis examines the naval stores industry in antebellum eastern North Carolina from the perspective of a Wayne County planter-merchant who participated in the boom. The core material comes from the recently discovered commercial papers of George W. Collier that included a turpentine still account book and correspondence from three commission merchants. The names listed in the account book were cross referenced with the 1850 Census of Wayne County to create a database of raw turpentine producers who traded with the still, their relative wealth, slave holding, and farm status. The commercial correspondence illuminated the business relationships between Collier and the merchants who shipped, received, and sold his naval stores. By using 1852 daily newspaper accounts of maritime activity in the port of New York, a quantitative schooner database was compiled that revealed information about shipping. North Carolina port activity, and identified the nine commission merchants who represented over 85 percent of the naval stores market in New York. By integrating these sources, this thesis provides a detailed account of how one planter-merchant turned raw turpentine into wealth during a transformative period in North Carolina history.
