Abstract This is a "family Beethoven" in many respects. It measures up to what we have come to describe as "family size." It offers as comprehensive a view of Beethoven and his music as is possible in one volume. This Beethoven guide is for all Beethoven lovers. It takes the Master period by period, development by development, plateau by plateau, and examines him and his music from start to finish. Each of the sections summarizes the events of a given span of years. This is followed by the reminiscences of those who knew Beethoven, that in turn by the relevant letters, and finally a classified analysis of the compositions of those years, technical and lucid, for musician and layman alike.
