Summary The historical scholarship dedicated to colonial North Carolina overlooked the role of the small port towns of Beaufort, Edenton, and New Bern. The primary purpose of this study is to fill this void in the history of colonial North Carolina. By incorporating primary and secondary resources this study emphasizes the role played by the ports of Beaufort, Edenton, and New Bern in the First British Empire and in the development of colonial North Carolina. Through a detailed analysis of Beaufort, Edenton, and New Bern the following questions will be answered: If the estimations of colonial authorities were correct, how did this affect other aspects of life in these port towns? What was education and religion like in the colony's small port towns? What were the means of subsistence and what trade goods passed through these overlooked windows of commerce? How do these port towns compare to each other politically and economically? Finally, how do these ports compare in the development of their economy, education system, local religious customs with other ports within the first British Empire.
