Abstract | The purpose of this thesis is to show some of the ways by which Ives gives familiar musical materials new perspectives. In this paper, three songs by Ives are examined: Ann Street, from "The Swimmers," and Like a Sick Eagle. The author shows how, through the use of extreme tempi and the juxtaposition of styles, Ives denies the listener the traditional implications of tonality, counterpoint and basic pitch collections. |
