Scope and content The interviews provide an in-depth account of Judge Larkin's life and career. Included are commentaries on local activities in Jones County, N.C.; local and state politics (1935-1960); World War II; the 1960 gubernatorial campaign; N.C. political personalities; federal courts; and his philosophy of the court. On judicial matters he discusses the rights of the accused, appeals procedures, equal justice, school integration, and interesting cases in which he has been involved.

Biographical noteJudge Larkins has served as U.S. District Court Judge for the Eastern District of N.C. since 1961. Previously he was a practicing attorney, state senator, president pro-tem of the senate, secretary of the N.C. Democratic Executive Committee, chairman of the N.C. Democratic Executive Committee, Democratic National Committeeman, and candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor of N.C.
