Biographical note | Johnetta Webb Spilman was born in Chowan County and moved to Greenville, N. C. in 1916 to teach school. She married J.B. Spilman, treasurer of East Carolina College, and subsequently became asst. treasurer of the college. Spilman became active in the North Carolina Democratic party as a precinct chairman in 1924 before running unsuccessfully for the N.C. senate. In 1932 she was vice-chairman of the Clyde R. Hoey gubernatorial campaign in 1936. Mrs. Spilman served as Vice-chairman of the N.C. Unemployment Compensation Commisstion (1936-1941), director of a resident hall for WAVES in Washington, D.C. (1941-1942), Manager of the Greenville Employment Security Commission (1942-1944), Executive director of the Pitt County T.B. Association (1950-1957), and director of the N.C. Mental Health Association (1957-1958), She has been vice-chairman of the N.C. Democratic State Executive Committee and coordinator of the Council on the Aging. |
