Abstract Music in America is a passionate enterprise. The selling of music in America is a multi-million dollar business. But in the midst of all the passions, the fortunes and the ecstasy of the musical experiences live real people in a real world. This sociological view of music in America deals with the musical fads, fashions and taste cultures of the men of music and music itself. Part 1 is an exploration of the jazz phenomenon in America from the twenties through the fifties as described by perceptive sociologists, social historians and critics like Howard Becker, Neil Leonard, Morroe Berger and Nat Hentoff. Part 2 looks to a post-jazz era in pop music. The rock revolution becomes the focus for analytical and critical concern by thoughtful viewers of the rock scene such as Howard Junker, Irving Louis Horowitz and Jon Landau. The editor has selected material from diverse sources. The result is a thoughtful and sometimes controversial perspective toward the past, present and future directions of American popular music.
