Biographical noteThe Marietta Manufacturing Company began in 1852 as W. F. Robertson & Sons Company in Beverly, Ohio. The company, which built stoves, capstans, boiler feed pumps, and other steamboat equipment, moved to Marietta, Ohio, following a fire in 1881. After the Robertson family sold their company interest in 1892, the Marietta Manufacturing Company was formed by Alla Windsor, J. D. Lashley, and James H. McConnell. Following a 1913 flood, the company moved to Point Pleasant, W.Va., where it built steam engines and water vessels, some of which were built to fulfill government contracts during World Wars I and II. Before ceasing operation in February 1970, Marietta had expanded its offerings to carbon black plants, natural gasoline plants, coal mining machines, and watercraft repairs. The company briefly reopened under Amherst Industries, Inc. as Point Pleasant Marine Company, but closed in 1984 after labor trouble and a strike by employees.
