This collection contains a memoir from William Augustus Parvin, a Confederate prisoner of war from Washington, N.C. The memoir contains descriptions of ship cargo, a soldier's daily life, the protection of Ocracoke Inlet, Fort Hatteras's surrender to Union forces on August 29, 1861, Parvin's treatment as a prisoner of war in New York, and his eventual escape from prison. Also included in the collection is some information on Parvin's career as a steamboat captain from 1877-1907. |

Biographical note | William Augustus Parvin was born in 1840 and died in 1924. A sailor who joined a volunteer unit of the Confederate Army in Washington, N.C., he was sent to Fort Hatteras and then taken as a prisoner of war when the fort surrendered to Union forces. |
