General noteIn a letter to Clarence S. Brigham, dated March 31, 1933, John M. Merriam, president of the Framingham Historical Society, suggests that Brigadier-General John Nixon is the "worthy officer" to whom the poem is addressed. Cf. AAS correspondence file. Nixon, a native of Framingham, returned to Massachusetts as one of the officers in charge of Burgoyne's surrendered soldiers.
