Abstract The reputation of Frederick Delius has grown steadily since his death in 1934 and his admirers' devotion to his work increasingly has the characteristics of a cult. This volume was first put together to celebrate the 70th birthday of his amanuensis Eric Fenby, and has been reprinted because of the continuing demand. The editor has compiled this Delius Companion, which brings together writings about the man and his music by distinguished musicians and friends, which give a many-faceted picture of their subject. Felix Aprahamian has written an Introduction to a symposium whose contributors include John F. Runciman, Sir Thomas Beecham, Gerald Cumberland, Paul Klenau, Richard Capell, C. W. Orr, Neville Cardus, Constant Lambert, Edwin Evans, May Harrison, Ernest Newman, Cecily Arnold, Robert Nichols, Heinrich Simon, Cecil Gray, Edward Dent, Philip Oyler, Sir Edward Elgar, Percy Grainger, William Randel, Rachel Lowe, Lionel Carley, Robert Threlfall, Deryck Cooke and Delius himself. Invaluable to the specialist and fascinating to the general reader, the present volume should help to bring more music lovers into contact with one of the most enjoyable of late romantic composers, as well as collecting in permanent form so much of the best writing and recollection about Frederick Delius.
