Abstract This wonderful illustrated treasury, which contains two volumes out of print since 1956, includes the words and music of seventy-six rollicking sea songs and chanteys as well as a picturesque collection of the beliefs, habits, and speech of the American sailor in the old days of iron men and wooden ships. The first part of the book contains descriptive information about the songs' origins, and words and music to such favorites as "Early in the morning," "Shenandoah," "The banks of the Sacramento," "Cape Cod girls," and "Bell-bottom trousers." The second section is divided into three main division: "Seeing things at sea: myths, superstitions, omens, and weather lore," "The ship and the company she keeps: customs, traditions, legends, and yarns," and "Salty speech: cries, epithets, gripes, and maxims." This spirited volume is sure to appeal to sailors, students of our seafaring history, and those readers always on the lookout for interesting facets of Americana.
