Abstract |
Basketball player and sports commentator Norm Van Lier was born in East Liverpool, Ohio in 1947. Throughout high school and college, Van Lier excelled on the court, and in 1969, he was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA draft. After being traded to the Cincinnati Royals, Van Lier led the NBA in assists his rookie year, and by 1971, he returned to the Chicago Bulls. Van Lier remained with the Bulls until 1978, during which he played in three All-Star games. He was selected as a member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team three times. After retiring in 1979, Van Lier became active by serving as a television and radio sports commentator. He also worked to promote education on racial, ethnic and human rights amongst today's youth. Van Lier passed away on February 26, 2009 at the age of 61. He was survived by his wife, Susan, two daughters and one granddaughter. |
