Abstract Politician Melvin Watt was born in rural North Carolina on August 26, 1945. One of three boys born to a single mother, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina in 1963, earning a scholarship to Yale University Law School. In 1971, he joined the law firm of Chambers, Stein, Ferguson and Becton. Working as a civil rights attorney for twenty-two years, he accepted an appointment to the North Carolina State Senate in 1985. With his eldest son, Brian, as campaign manager, Watt completed a successful bid for State Representative of North Carolina's newly formed 12th District in 1992, becoming the second African American elected to Congress from North Carolina. Serving on the Judicial, Financial Services and Joint Economic committees, he resigned the House on January 6, 2014 when confirmed as head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Watt's two sons, Brian and Jason, are both graduates of their father's alma mater, Yale University.
