Abstract Activist and pastor Reverend Addie Wyatt was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, on March 8, 1924. Giving her first recitation in church at age three, Wyatt went on to speak for laborers and human rights. Serving as the first female international vice president of Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, Wyatt was a vocal proponent of fair opportunities for women and minorities. Wyatt and her husband also worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and co-founded Operation Breadbasket. Later, Eleanor Roosevelt appointed her to the Commission on the Status of Women. In 1974, Wyatt helped found the Coalition of Labor Union Women and was later a founder of the National Organization of Women. Wyatt served as co-pastor of Vernon Park Church of God in Chicago and remained active in politics. She was named one of Time's Women of the Year in 1975. She passed away on March 28, 2012.
