Abstract |
Visual artist Allan Crite was born on March 20, 1910, in North Plainfield, New Jersey and grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. Crite's mother, a poet, encouraged him to draw. Crite enrolled in Boston's Museum of Fine Arts' Children's Art Centre. He graduated from English High School in 1929. He was accepted at Yale University, but chose to attend the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Later, he earned his A.L.B. degree from Harvard University in 1968. Crite's work was categorized into three themes: Negro spirituals, religious themes that emphasize non-European aspects of the Bible, and general African American experiences. He was one of the few African American artists employed by the Federal Arts Project. He was also an engineering draftsman at Boston Naval shipyard. Crite helped to create the Artist's Collective in Boston, a forum for emerging African American artists. Allan Crite passed away on September 6, 2007 at age 97. |
