Abstract |
Military officer and county government administrator Samuel F. Saxton, Sr. was born on August 5, 1929 in Ashville, North Carolina. He attended Stevens High School, joined the United States Marine Corps and was trained at the Montford Point Marine Base in North Carolina, a segregated training camp for African Americans. Beginning as steward, he rose through the ranks to become a commissioned officer and administrator at two military correctional installations. He received his B.S. degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland in 1975, and his M.A. degree in rehabilitative counseling. Saxton served as chief of Custody and Security in Montgomery County, Maryland and director of the County's Detention Center. He served from 1983 to 2000 as director of corrections in Prince George's County, Maryland. Saxton was a member of the American Jail Association, past president of the American Jail Association, the Maryland Correctional Administrators Association and president of the Montford Point Marine Association. |
