Abstract |
Civic leader, newspaper columnist, and nurse Mary "Betty" Brown was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Schaumburg and Elgin, Illinois. She graduated from the nurse's program at St. Joseph's Hospital in Joliet. She was the first black nursing student in Joliet. She was inspired by her mother, who had been a nurse's aide at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois. Brown was multi-talented. She wrote a popular column in the Elgin Courier called "Steppin Out with Betty Brown". She also worked as a wardrobe and makeup consultant to Miss Illinois in the Miss America pageant. She was named one of the One Hundred Women of Destiny selected by Marilyn Miglin & Associates. She received numerous awards for her civic work, including being named Altrusa Outstanding Woman of the Year; Outstanding Woman in Advertising; and the YMCA Margaret Henry Award. She was married to Floyd Brown, who worked in Chicago radio. |
