Abstract Artist Edward Clark was born in 1926, in the Storyville area of New Orleans, Louisiana. Clark studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1947 to 1951, and L'Academie de la Grande Chaumi re in Paris in 1952. He was an abstract expressionist painter who was credited with working on a shaped canvas, an innovation that influenced contemporary art through the 1950s and 1960s. In 1957, Clark moved to New York City where he became a charter member of the Brata Gallery on Tenth Street. It was during this period that he made his celebrated shaped canvas, which was showcased in the Brata Gallery Christmas Group Show. In 1972, in an article in Art News, Lawrence Campbell described the painting as the first of its kind. Clark's work was featured in international museum collections. In 2013, he received the Legends and Legacy Award from the Art Institute of Chicago.
