Abstract |
Educator and education consultant Floretta McKenzie was born on August 19, 1935 in Lakeland, Florida. McKenzie earned her B.A. degree from D.C. Teachers College in 1956 and her M.Ed. from Howard University in 1957 before working as a teacher in Maryland. She rose through the ranks as an educator in Maryland and Washington, D.C. before being hired as deputy assistant secretary by the U.S. Department of Education. In 1981, McKenzie became superintendent of schools and chief state school officer for D.C. Public Schools. She oversaw initiatives to build partnerships with public and private organizations. She oversaw the country's twenty-first-largest school system, managing 89,000 students, 13,000 employees and a $400 million budget. She also implemented one of the country's first initiatives to integrate computer technology into the public school curriculum. In 1988, McKenzie started her own educational consulting firm, The McKenzie Group. McKenzie passed away on March 23, 2015 at age 79. |
