Abstract |
Educator and author Yvonne Sanders-Butler was born on November 27, 1957 in Vaughan, Mississippi. She graduated from high school in 1975, receiving her B.S. degree from Jackson State University in 1979. Sanders-Butler earned her M.S. degree from West Georgia College and a specialist degree from Jacksonville University in Anniston, Alabama. She received her Ph.D. degree in 2002. Sanders-Butler started her career in education in 1987 with DeKalb County schools, and became the principal of Browns Mill Elementary School, in Lithonia, Georgia in 1995. After discovering she had diabetes in 1996, she made it her mission to improve the health of the students at her school. In 1998, Sanders-Butler banned soft drinks and instituted a breakfast program that included oatmeal. As a result of her efforts, student test scores improved and disciplinary issues declined. Sanders-Butler authored Dessert Lovers Choice and Healthy Kids, Smart Kids. |
