Abstract Basketball player and administrator Charles Holton was born on September 3, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Holton graduated from St. Benedict School in Milwaukee in 1948 where he played basketball. Within two years, Holton became a member of the Harlem Globetrotters, the then Chicago-based basketball franchise headed by legendary coach William "Pop" Gates. In 1952, Holton graduated with his M.S. degree from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. He was the first African American to graduate from St. Norbert. Holton played with the Harlem Globetrotters for six more years, leaving the team in 1957. He began working as social services administrator for Milwaukee County the following year. In 1967, Holton obtained his M.S.W. degree from the University of Michigan and worked for the State of Wisconsin as a social services administrator. Holton became executive director of Milwaukee's House of Peace in 1997 which he led until retirement in 2000.
