Abstract |
U.S. congressman Sanford Bishop, Jr., was born on February 4, 1947 in Mobile, Alabama. Upon earning his J.D. degree from Emory University, he opened a law practice in Columbus, Georgia in 1972. Bishop was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1977, and remained there until being elected to the State Senate in 1991. Bishop was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives the following year. He served on a number of committees, including the House Intelligence Committee and the Agriculture Committee, and he chaired the Democratic House Task Force on Homeland Security. He was a member of the Black Congressional Caucus. Bishop has been given numerous honors and awards, including the Spirit of Enterprise Award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Friend of the Children Award from the Child Advocacy Coalition. An Eagle Scout, he was also honored by the Boy Scouts for his distinguished achievement. |
