Abstract "We live in an era of keen curiosity about ideas, achievements, and behavior patterns of our fellow-men. It is important, we believe, to know an individual personally. To understand his origin, his ideals, his affiliations, is vital if we expect to achieve sound knowledge and true appreciation. Especially in music we are interested in the personalities of the artists whose magic enthralls us. As a lifelong student of music, one for who years has been associated with the inner circle of the musical world, the author has compiled this book. The author makes it clear that the words "Jew" and "Jewish" are not used in their religious or national sense. He realizes that a number of those included in this volume, though reputed to be of Jewish origin, are now of a different faith. He is not concerned with their religion, past or present, but solely with their ethnic roots. In music, as in literature and every branch of learning, the Jew is conspicuously active. To music, in particular, he brings the great qualities of emotional feeling, a response to the poetic, a sense of the dramatic, and a rare gift of analysis. Music - creative and interpretative - has been and still is immeasurably enriched by the artistic contribution of the Jewish people. About eighty percent of all the outstanding instrumentalists and conductors during the past seventy or eighty years, have been musicians of Jewish descent. Just look at the names in this book! Many stars of the musical firmament whose glamorous artistry - whether in concert hall or opera house - has captivated hundreds of thousands throughout the globe, are here presented in readable and illuminating biographies."
