Abstract | The Lost Girl tells the story of Alvina Houghton, the daughter of a draper in the industrial Midlands, who meets a penniless young Italian in a touring variety act and, responding to his dark, animal nature, gradually, almost reluctantly, falls in love with him. Finally, she abandons her provincial security, they marry impulsively, and he returns to Italy with her to live in a bleak mountain village. The novel is thematically close to Lady Chatterley's Lover, promoting, as that book does, the idea that human intelligence has no value when it is cut off from the sensual life. |
