Abstract Jamie Oliver helped highlight the dire standards of school meals in the UK, but in France, a local scheme run by Agnès Lommez has not only produced first class school meals but also revolutionised attitudes to food and health. The Fleurbaix Laventie Ville Santé project was begun in 1992 in two small towns in northern France, about 40kms from Lille. Although it involves nearly all the inhabitants, its focus is on the local primary and junior schools. Here, food has become an integral part of learning in order to create an understanding of nutrition and health from the earliest years. The scheme been so successful has that local levels of childhood obesity have been radically reduced and these two small towns have attracted the attention of the rest of France and now Europe. This programme shows why.
