Summary |
Research indicates that negative attitudes toward the elderly contribute to the paucity of registered nurses interested in working with the aged. This pretest/posttest study was designed to ascertain if student nurse knowledge about and attitude toward the elderly could be altered by a gerontological course and a nursing home clinical experience. It also examines students' prior experiences with the elderly and interest in working with the elderly. Patmore's Facts on Aging Quiz, Kogan's Old People Scale, and a researcher-designed questionnaire was administered to 20 associate degree nursing students. The relationship between students' prior experiences with the elderly and attitude toward the elderly was not statistically significant. Despite a significant increase in favorable attitude and a trend toward increased knowledge. students continued to show little interest in working with the elderly. The author suggests that large sample longitudinal studies be initiated. |
