Abstract | Patty Merrill overhears a conversation between her mother and sister and it disturbs her enough that she runs away to New York. Forced to find work to support herself, she happens into a job as lady's companion to Sylvia Cole, who immediately takes her south to a winter retreat at the Pine Crest Inn. There she sees an old friend, but what can she do but avoid him, as she has given a false name to Miss Cole and must remain hidden. Mr. Treeves, while curious about the mysterious girl, has little time to find her out as he has set himself on a course of becoming a preacher of the people. |
