Summary | Membrane proteins of Bacillus subtilis were compared under iron deficient and iron sufficient conditions by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis at various stages of growth. The results showed the presence of a membrane protein in all iron deficient cells which was not present in iron sufficient cells. This iron regulated protein had a molecular weight of approximately 35,000 and constituted roughly 3-67. of the total membrane proteins. Different stages of growth resulted in differences in banding patterns in the gel electrophoregrams, however, at every stage, the 35,000 dalton protein was observed only in the iron deficient cells. An attempt was made to test iron binding characteristics of the membrane proteins but proved unsuccessful. |
