Abstract Profiles Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which was the first prison in the world to use solitary confinement as a means to rehabilitate prisoners. Program details the history of the prison which opened its doors in 1829 and operated for 142 years, closing in 1972. Includes interviews with some of the last people to live and work at Eastern State Penitentiary as well as experts in the criminal justice and sociology fields.
